Rob was the marketing manager of a legal firm that was part of a much larger group. Continual pressure to achieve meant that he was not only having to meet ever tighter deadlines, but also to deal with clients who were increasingly demanding and unforgiving – a situation familiar to anyone working in the corporate rat race.
This wasn’t work he enjoyed but it paid the bills. That was until the winter of 2007 when he was fired.
Being sacked from what was an obviously downsizing company, didn’t come as a complete surprise to Rob. But he had hoped that by keeping his head down and working diligently he would avoid being one of those who went. Unfortunately, that strategy hadn’t worked and he was out.
Now, the gloom and frustration at being in a job he hated turned to gloom and frustration at having no job at all.
After a few months of trying to get back into the same line of work, Rob decided he’d take a sideways step and successfully applied to work as an intern for a not-for-profit organisation.
He immediately felt comfortable in his new role.
Gone was the deadline-driven environment, where an unimpressive job title meant that he was perceived as being there only to do a very specific job and not otherwise seen or heard. Now he was working with people who were committed to making a difference.
Yes, he’d taken a pay cut (after all, when you’re sacked there’s no pay at all), but now he was working with people who were far more creative and willing to try out new ideas. They had a refreshing ‘can do’ attitude that was a far cry from the corporate rules and dead hand of bureaucracy that had strangled thinking where he’d previously worked.
Though Rob is now probably working harder than before and on many more things, he is much less stressed because he’s far more in control. He feels he is adding value, no longer just a small cog in the corporate sausage machine, but someone who matters.
